Thanksgiving Dinner and Worship - November 19

Turkey and dressing will be provided and you are asked to bring sides and desserts to share. We will need several people to help set up, clean up and take down tables and chairs. If you can help, please sign up at the Information Desk, on your yellow communication card on Sunday or call Jane Downs in the church office.

UMCOR Christmas Shoeboxes
UMCOR shoeboxes are here ready to be filled and distributed at Christmas time to children in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic. The boxes include a list of suggested items to be included (printed on the side of the box) and you are asked to check off the items you include. Our children are taking 30 of the boxes and there are another 40 boxes to be filled by anyone interested in this outreach. The boxes are located at the Information Desk and can be returned to a bin near that location. When you turn in your box, please include an envelope with $4 to be used to ship the gifts. If including a check, please make it out to Maples.

Advent Study to Be Offered
In November and December our Senior Adults will be offered a four week Advent Bible Study beginning on Thursday, November 30 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 118. David Laird will facilitate The Redemption of Scrooge, from Matt Rawle's The Pop in Culture Series.

Ebenezer Scrooge is a man in dire need of a second chance. Is redemption possible for such a greedy, dark, and sad character? From the ghosts of Christmas past, to the Life of the present, and the resurrection of Christmas future, this Advent study will "bless us every one" and reinvigorate our spiritual journeys as we look at this familiar story through the lens of faith.

Poinsettias
Order forms for poinsettias will be included in your worship bulletin for the next two Sundays. If you would like to place a poinsettia in the sanctuary/narthex for the Advent season, please be sure to fill out your order and turn in to the office with payment by Tuesday, November 21.

Christmas Ornaments for Sale in December
If you missed out on purchasing one of our 175th Anniversary Christmas Ornaments, you will have a second chance during December. Cost is $20 and benefits our Youth Choir trip to Lake Junaluska next summer for Worship Arts Week.

Food Pantry
Great things are happening at the Olive Branch Food Pantry as we continue to serve the people of DeSoto County. The Food Pantry is open on Tuesday mornings from 10am-noon and Thursday evenings from 5-7pm. People may request assistance once a month. There are many ways to volunteer.

One is to help on Maples' assigned work days. December 5th is the next Tuesday morning on which Maples is scheduled. Another way to assist is with food pick up from Kroger or Walmart and to stock the pantry on Mondays and Thursdays from 10am-noon. Yet another way to help is through donations of funds and canned food. The Food Pantry is looking into buying a commercial vehicle to handle the pick-ups from Kroger and Walmart and would appreciate financial donations towards that purchase.

In December the pantry has its annual Christmas giveaway day on Saturday December 16th. People may come and "shop" for items that have been donated to help with the Christmas season. Maples Memorial is collecting socks as part of this program. Socks of all sizes can be placed in the Food Pantry bin at the Information Desk. The pantry serves 250 families with the Christmas giveaway. You may also help to set up on the day before the Christmas giveaway or that Saturday. Many volunteers are needed from 12-5pm on Saturday December 16th, 2017.

Christmas Angel Tree
In cooperation with Together Ministry Center the Children's committee is sponsoring the Angel Tree Ministry this year. Together Ministry Center is actively engaged in ministry to the poor and underserved in DeSoto County. Angels are children from the Candle light Trailer Park in Olive Branch.

Sign up begins Sunday November 19th on the Giving Wall located next to the Information Desk. Please sign out your angel to a member of the Children's Committee. Typically one angel cost around $100. If you would like to sponsor an angel, but do not have the time to go shopping, a Children's Committee member would love to shop for you; just make a donation, mark your Angel's number on the check and turn it into the office.

All Angel packages are due back by Sunday December 10th.
