22nd Annual Wesley Meadows Golf Tournament

The four man scramble will take place on Thursday, April 23 at Timber Truss (formerly known as Plantation Golf Club) here in Olive Branch with tee times at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. A continental breakfast will be available before 8:00 a.m. and lunch will start at 11:30 a.m. for the 1:00 p.m. tee time. Proceeds from this year's tournament will go towards a maintenance endowment to keep the home well maintained for years to come. Individual fees are $125 per person or $500 per team. If you are unable to play, you can purchase various sponsorships. Also, the Maddox Foundation has granted a challenge grant, offering up to $1 million to match all donations raised at this tournament.

UMCOR in DeSoto County

We are so grateful for the volunteers from the local churches who have been on the ground from day one, helping their neighbors and community with emergency relief and clean-up.

UMCOR has been asked to assist with Disaster Case Management by DeSoto County Emergency Management. Disaster Case Managers assist those affected by the disaster by helping resource long-term recovery needs. To assist in deciding what scale the long-term program will need to be, we need local volunteers to assist in screening calls and potentially door-to-door assessments.

Contact Mellie Thomas, disasters@mississippi-umc.org, if you are willing to volunteer in this effort to transition to the next phase of recovery.

Food Pantry News

March 10th is the next Tuesday morning date for Maples at the Olive Branch Food Pantry from 9:30 a.m. until noon.

March/April Online Signup for Little Free Pantry

In addition to supporting the Olive Branch Food Pantry, Maples Memorial participates in the Little Free Pantry movement. Our Little Pantry is located on the edge of the parking lot between Maples and the Y. Who is the Little Free Pantry for? The LFP is for neighbors helping neighbors. In high poverty areas, the LFP is most often for those who are not easily able to meet everyday food and personal needs. In all places, the Little Free Pantry is for those who want and/or need to give. How does the Little Free Pantry differ from other food pantries? The LFP is small, so it cannot stock the quantity and variety other food pantries can. For this reason, it should not be relied on for meeting pervasive need. Many food pantries require application before use and have set hours of operation. Anyone may access the LFP at any time. Food pantries operate as service providers, those who use them as clients. The LFP dissolves that professional boundary. Whether stocking or taking stock, everyone approaches the LFP the same way, mediating the shame that accompanies need.

Beginning October 1, Maples Glow Kids Sunday/Wednesday Night activities for Prek-5th will be renamed...MaplesKids!

Sunday mornings will be taught by our interim children's director, Sarah Kirchhoff and two volunteers will be in monthly rotations with her each morning. Sundays during Maples Kids, the interim children's director will teach a "theme/topic" directly related to what Pastor Stephen Sparks will be preaching. (This will lead to family discussions and will help keep to topic with the whole family.) Your children will go to Sunday school normally, but for Maples Kids they will go to the sanctuary. Then during "Children's Moment" your child/children will come forward to go with our interim director and the volunteers to the MaplesKids activity. You will still pick your child up after Maples Kids like you did for Glow Kids.It will look like this...

  • Going to Sunday School I check my child in at the kiosk by the offices, get a sticker, place it on my child's back, and keep a copy for myself.
  • I then pick my child up from Sunday School and take them with me to the Sanctuary for the first 15-20 minutes of the service. (This is so that we help them connect to the larger cross generational service.) I DO NOT NEED TO CHECK THEM BACK IN FOR MAPLESKIDS (children's church).
  • If I don't make it to Sunday School I can check my child in to MaplesKids at a new kiosk in the Narthex, get a sticker for them and for me, and then take them with me to my seat.
  • All children will then be invited forward for Children's Sermon.
  • Then these Children will be released to Mapleskids and be taken out by our awesome volunteers.
  • If a child doesn't have a sticker then they will not leave the sanctuary and a volunteer will attempt to locate the parents to get the child checked in.
  • Parents will at the end of the service pick up their child from the Mapleskids room.

Automatic drafts for contributions to Maples Memorial can be made on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis for gifts to the Operating Budget and selected special giving opportunities. The process is easy and is a great way to make sure your gifts are received even when you are out of town! Registration forms are available in the church office. If you have questions, please contact Pam Bowick or Jane Downs at 662-895-2279 or pam@mapleschurch.org or jane@mapleschurch.org.

Pastoral Care Team Needs Men!

Our recently formed Pastoral Care Team has been making a huge difference in our outreach to the hurting in our community and we can't thank them enough for the care and compassion they continue to show. One need they have expressed is for more men to participate in reaching out to other men who are home bound or experiencing illness or loss. If you can help, please contact Donna Zaino or Charlotte Abrams.
