Disciple Fast Track
Have you been interested in the Disciple Bible Study series but intimated by the length of the study and the amount of study required? Disciple Fast Track Into the Word Into the World is an adaptation of the original, bestselling Disciple Bible Study. The study is ideal for busy people who want to fit an in-depth Bible study into their schedule. It retains the familiar Disciple format with its theme word, theme verse, statement of the human condition, daily and weekly assignments, and prayer. Each week you will encounter three spiritual disciplines, learn what they are, and how you can engage those disciplines.

The first discipline varies from week to week, then moves into Sabbath and prayer. In every session, you commit to how you will respond to Scripture in terms of ministry in the world. Classes meet for a total of 24 weeks, studying Genesis-Exodus and Luke-Acts for 12 sessions each.

Rev. David Laird will be facilitating Disciple Fast Track on Wednesday nights beginning August 16. If you are interested, contact Rev Laird or sign up at the Information Desk. Each participant is responsible for securing his/her own book (available at Cokesbury and Amazon).

Backpacks for Candlelite - Due July 30
You know the school year is not too far off when school supplies are the first thing you see in Walmart or Target! And that means it is time for us to start putting backpacks together for children whose families struggle just to provide school clothes and put food on the table. Our Children's Ministry is spearheading the effort to supply backpacks filled with school supplies for the children living at Candlelite. You can sign up at the Information Desk for a child to "adopt" and receive a list of his/her needs. Backpacks will need to be turned in to the church by Sunday, July 30. For more information, please contact Rev. Alecia Fischer.

Golf Tournament Scheduled for August 5
The Men's Club sponsored Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on Saturday, August 5 with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. at Cherokee Golf Club. Entry fee is $85.00 and includes 2 mulligans, breakfast and lunch, contests, prizes and awards. Entry forms will be in the Sunday worship bulletin for the next few weeks and also available in the office. Please make checks payable to Maples' Men's Club. Forms and checks can be turned in to the office or to Stephen Gullett or Rusty Smith. Proceeds of the tournament benefit the Leon Turpin Scholarship Fund awarded to one or more high school graduates each year.

If you aren't able to participate by playing in the tournament, you can still support this project by being a Hole Sponsor. Sponsorships are $100.00 each and are a large part of the funding for the scholarships. Call Stephen or Rusty Smith for more information about Hole Sponsorship.

New Sunday Schedule for Sunday in August
Remember that on August 6 we will return to our normal schedule of two Sunday morning worship services at 8:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Also we will resume Sunday afternoon programming on August 20. There will be some changes in the youth Sunday afternoon schedule. Wednesday Night Fall Kick-Off!  - August 9
We will kick off our Wednesday night schedule on August 9 at 6:30 p.m. with an exciting line up: Eddie Willis, Director of the Ole Miss Wesley Foundation, will lead worship and music and Methodist Healthcare will be represented to inform us about the services they offer. Revs. Hal Hall and David Laird will give brief overviews of the Wednesday night studies they are offering that will begin August 16 at 6:30 p.m. Our Wednesday evening schedule also includes a nursery, children's and youth programming and chancel choir practice.

  • Hal will begin the semester with a study of the book, The Quest for Holiness-from Shallow Belief to Mature Believer, a seven week study written by David C. Long.
  • David will be facilitating the new Disciple Fast Track which will begin with a 12 week in depth study of the Old Testament.

There are sign up sheets at the Information Desk for both these classes. Participants are responsible for securing their own books.

Wednesday night dinners will also resume on August 9 at 5:30 p.m. with Memphis Chef Sean Gilliam in charge! We will still need our Feed My Sheep teams to help with preparation and serving, so please let Lynn Johnston (lynn@mapleschurch.org) know if you are interested in serving in this way. Just a heads up-this fall the price for adult meals will rise to $7 and $3 for children 10 and under.

Acolyte Training - August 13
Children in the 4th through 6th grades are invited to serve in worship as acolytes on Sunday mornings. We ask that all acolytes (even veterans) attend a training session to learn about the significance of elements of worship and the sanctuary and what role an acolyte plays in the service. For more information, you can contact Joey Lott at joey@mapleschurch.org. The training will take place on Sunday, August 13 at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary.

August Senior Adult Lunch - August 17
Our August senior adult event will be a catered lunch on Thursday, August 17 at 11:30 a.m. in Wesley Hall. Featured speaker will be Lt. Kevin McKenzie with a program about staying safe! We will let you know about the menu and put out a sign up sheet closer to the date.
