Staying Connected With Maples Youth                                  -Pastor Joel Garrott

I hope you all are staying well through this strange season. I’d like to give you a couple of notes on what the Maples Youth ministry is doing right now:

Sunday night small groups: We have junior high and senior high small groups on Sunday evenings, meeting through Facetime or Zoom. If your youth would like to be involved, just let me know and we’ll get them connected. For the next four weeks after Easter, small groups will focus on the Resurrection and how it shapes the Christian life.

Wednesday night sessions: Lisa Lynn and I will be hosting a Zoom session for the youth every Wednesday night at 6:30pm. We’ll be reading through the gospel of Mark and discussing it together. I’m encouraging the youth to read one chapter per week on their own and respond through a bible study outline. To join the Wednesday night sessions, youth just need to download the Zoom app, and then click the link we send on Remind at 6:30 pm on Wednesdays.

Older adult check-in: We are working on pairing some of our youth with older adults in our church for weekly phone calls. Youth will check in with them, ask them how they’re doing and let them know the church is praying for them and here for them. More details on this soon.

Instagram prayer prompts: Youth can follow the Maples Youth Instagram account to receive prayer prompts during the week.

To stay connected and receive updates, sign up for the Maples Youth Remind account by texting @maplesyou to 81010.

Feel free to reach out to me for questions or conversation (662.501.6703, joel@mapleschurch.org). My prayers are with all of you as we venture further into this new season. Hope to see you sooner rather than later.

Currently we are not meeting at the church due to COVID-19 precautions; however, Our NEW Children’s website is now live!  It is mapleskids.weebly.com. There will be weekly bible studies for you to do with your kiddos and other content coming.

When we are meeting on the church property, please join MAPLESKIDS! Sunday/Wednesday Night activities for Prek-5th GRADE.

Sunday mornings will be taught by our interim children's director, Sarah Kirchhoff and two volunteers will be in monthly rotations with her each morning. Sundays during Maples Kids, the interim children's director will teach a "theme/topic" directly related to what Pastor Stephen Sparks will be preaching. (This will lead to family discussions and will help keep to topic with the whole family.) Your children will go to Sunday school normally, but for Maples Kids they will go to the sanctuary. Then during "Children's Moment" your child/children will come forward to go with our interim director and the volunteers to the MaplesKids activity. You will still pick your child up after Maples Kids like you did for Glow Kids.It will look like this...

  • Going to Sunday School I check my child in at the kiosk by the offices, get a sticker, place it on my child's back, and keep a copy for myself.
  • I then pick my child up from Sunday School and take them with me to the Sanctuary for the first 15-20 minutes of the service. (This is so that we help them connect to the larger cross generational service.) I DO NOT NEED TO CHECK THEM BACK IN FOR MAPLESKIDS (children's church).
  • If I don't make it to Sunday School I can check my child in to MaplesKids at a new kiosk in the Narthex, get a sticker for them and for me, and then take them with me to my seat.
  • All children will then be invited forward for Children's Sermon.
  • Then these Children will be released to Mapleskids and be taken out by our awesome volunteers.
  • If a child doesn't have a sticker then they will not leave the sanctuary and a volunteer will attempt to locate the parents to get the child checked in.
  • Parents will at the end of the service pick up their child from the Mapleskids room.

Reminder to Parents

Please note that if you are putting your children up through 5th grade in the church nursery, Children's Church or other classes during church wide events such as Sunday School, worship services or Wednesday night activities, at least one parent must stay on church property.

A Word from Pastor Stephen Sparks

Dear Maples Family;

We all missed worshiping in the sanctuary this last Sunday but I was overjoyed that we had over 140 families tuning in live and since then we have had over 700 people that have viewed our video from Sunday. I’m also grateful for your continued faithfulness in checking on each other, encouraging each other, in giving, and in prayer. This is in all likelihood is the new normal for several weeks. We will make it through this challenge together and will be stronger because of it. Every challenge has within it an opportunity for the church to be the church. Here is where we can shine!

We will be live online every Sunday for the immediate future. We will announce plans for the next few weeks in constant contact, online and in future mailings. We are making plans for some special events including Easter as well. We are monitoring the situation and hope to be back to regular worship as soon as possible. You can find it online at our Facebook page here. You can also watch as well as access other online content on our new YouTube channel MaplesChurchLive here. Content will be duplicated on both platforms.

This week, Maples will be hosting one Sunday School class via teleconference. You can join either by phone or device (instructions are below).  All are welcome to call/conference in to join us. If this is a format that you find beneficial during this time of isolation, please let your Sunday school teachers know if you want to do a call in just for your class and we will work to establish a platform for your individual class moving forward. In the meantime, we hope you join us this Sunday!  Again, you can join us via telephone or videoconferencing, whichever you prefer; instructions for both are below.

Friendship Sunday School will be available online via Zoom! You are welcome to join in!

If you are in an at risk group of persons for the Covid-19 virus please let us know at the church if you need help with shopping or with picking up things from the pharmacy. We have people in the church ready and willing to help! You can call the church office at 662-895-2279 or email Jane or me at stephen@MaplesChurch.org .

I want to thank you for your faithfulness last week. Many of you contributed online or mailed in your contributions this week. We want to make that process as easy as possible for you. That is why we are mailing a self-addressed stamped envelope to you. We will continue to work to ease the process. Even in crisis the ministry of the church continues and our fixed costs continue. There will be a day soon when the epidemic will pass and the restrictions will be eased. We want to be at our fullest capabilities when that happens while continuing to hold on to and expand our online features as the ministry of tomorrow today. We are taking steps to decrease some of our fixed costs and eliminate others. We are trying to be as good a steward with God’s resources as is possible.

I believe that God can and does redeem all things if we but submit them to him. He can redeem even this. If in this moment we pull closer together as a community of faith and as a beacon of light in our community, if we engage persons that are searching for hope and needing to connect or reconnect with God through a faith community, if we reach out to our neighbors and hear the cry of the needy, if we show great resolve, great faith, and great patience, if we develop new strategies to leverage the technology available to us to reach the world for Jesus Christ, if we continue to be a beacon of light in dark times, then we will have truly accomplished God’s mission for his Church in this world.

And the best thing of all is that God is with us!

I remain, Sincerely,

Stephen Sparks, Lead Pastor

March/April Online Signup for Little Free Pantry

In addition to supporting the Olive Branch Food Pantry, Maples Memorial participates in the Little Free Pantry movement. Our Little Pantry is located on the edge of the parking lot between Maples and the Y. Who is the Little Free Pantry for? The LFP is for neighbors helping neighbors. In high poverty areas, the LFP is most often for those who are not easily able to meet everyday food and personal needs. In all places, the Little Free Pantry is for those who want and/or need to give. How does the Little Free Pantry differ from other food pantries? The LFP is small, so it cannot stock the quantity and variety other food pantries can. For this reason, it should not be relied on for meeting pervasive need. Many food pantries require application before use and have set hours of operation. Anyone may access the LFP at any time. Food pantries operate as service providers, those who use them as clients. The LFP dissolves that professional boundary. Whether stocking or taking stock, everyone approaches the LFP the same way, mediating the shame that accompanies need.

To assist in deciding what scale the long-term program will need to be, we need local volunteers to assist in screening calls and potentially door-to-door assessments.
